How subscriptions work
An m-Path subscription gives you one year (also see subscription length) of access to the platform, including the features and participant slots of your chosen plan. You can upgrade your account at any time without losing data, questionnaires or schedules.
Subscription plans
m-Path offers four subscription plans designed to support different types of research projects.
- Free (Explore m-Path and set up a small pilot study. This plan is ideal if you want to test the platform before starting a larger project. You can set up a free dashboard account here.)
- Essential research (Designed for researchers running a single study. It includes the core m-Path features without personal support.)
- Standard research (Ideal for researchers or research groups managing multiple projects. It also includes personal support from m-Path team.)
- Comfort (Best suited for larger or more complex research projects. . In addition to all platform features, you’ll receive unparalleled support and take advantage of our 10+ years of expertise in mobile assessment.)
Overview of the features included in each plan:
Free (€0, 50 participants per year – ideal for a pilot study)
- 20+ question types: Use sliders, multiple choice items, open questions, smileys and many other assessment types.
- Extensive survey editor: Build and customize your questionnaires in a user-friendly online dashboard.
- Testing your study: Try out your questionnaire flow yourself before inviting participants.
- Public library: Share your questionnaires with other m-Path users, or build on their creations.
- Multimedia content: Include images, audio and video clips in your survey flow.
- Item combination: Display multiple questions on a single page, or group and randomize them in a container.
- Text formatting: Change font size and color, highlight text and insert web links.
- Survey accessibility: Improve accessibility with images and text-to-speech.
- Branching: Only show questions when certain conditions are met, creating dynamic survey paths.
- Randomization: Randomize the order of questions and answer options.
- Piped text: Reuse answers from previous questions in the text of new questions.
- Score computation: Automatically compute scores within a survey and adapt the survey flow based on the result.
- Response visualization: Visualize participants’ responses, also immediately in the app.
- Response awards: Stimulate response behavior with custom awards, progress bars and fireworks.
- Manual personalization: Manually personalize questionnaires and notification schedules for different individuals.
- Notification settings: Customize the text and sound of incoming notifications.
- Event-based sampling: Let participants start a survey at meaningful moments via a button on their app home screen.
- Single participant data export: basic export of data of single participants in .xlsx format.
- Manual: Find step-by-step instructions and video tutorials in this manual, and ask questions on our Reddit community.
- Reminders and expiration windows: Send reminders and let questionnaires expire after a set time.
- Burst sampling: Automatically schedule follow-up surveys based on participants’ real-time responses.
- Random sampling: Randomize the times at which notifications are sent.
- Compliance monitor: Track each participant’s response rate in real time.
- Participant management: Manage all participants of your study in the participants table.
Essential (all features of Free, plus)
- Automatic scheduler: Automatically fill in the questionnaire schedule for your participants. The study and schedule can start automatically when a participant joins your research project.
- Protocols: Combine questionnaires and a schedule into a reusable protocol that you can apply to multiple participants.
- Random allocation: Randomly assign new participants to one of your invitation templates, each with its own protocol (e.g. for different study conditions).
- Automatic personalization: Automatically personalize questionnaires and notification schedules for different individuals.
- Study automation: Automatically start a sampling scheme for new participants when they join your study.
- Onboarding pages: Automatically generate a personal onboarding page for each participant, with their invitation code and your own logo, title and welcome text.
- Advanced data export: Download a combined dataset of all participants for statistical analysis.
- m-Path R package: Easily import and analyze your m-Path data in R.
- Prolific integration: Recruit and compensate participants via Prolific.
- App user interaction: Share responses between participants (e.g. dyads) or let one participant trigger a survey for another.
- Recover participant accounts: If the participant loses their recovery code, the researcher can still recover the account.
Standard (all features of Essential, plus)
- Unlimited projects: Run any number of studies at the same time.
- Unlimited accounts and collaboration: Add colleagues to your subscription and work together on projects.
- Access rules: Give other m-Path accounts read, write or full access to your participants, protocols or profile features.
- Priority e-mail support: Get faster answers to your questions from the m-Path team. On average we answer within 24 hours.
- Add-ons: Extend your subscription with add-ons such as cognitive tests, mobile sensing or the moodboard editor (see Additional subscriptions below).
Comfort (all features of Standard, plus)
- Online meeting support: Discuss your study with the m-Path team in an online meeting.
- Advanced troubleshooting: Get help with complex questionnaires and study logic.
- Yearly workshop: Follow a workshop on designing your study in m-Path.
- Yearly study review: Have your study design reviewed by our experts.
The paid plans are available for 300 up to 3000 participants per year, in steps of 100 (per year, excl. VAT):

All plans include unlimited questionnaires, items and notifications; the price depends only on the number of participant slots and the subscription length (in case you subscribe for longer than a year).
If you want to change from an essential subscription to standard you only pay the price difference.
Participant slots
Participant slots represent the number of participants you can enroll in your studies. If you need more during your project, additional participant slots can be purchased at any time. For more information, see Buying participant slots.
Using m-Path in therapy? m-Path is free for individual practitioners.
Participants who joined while you were on the Free plan don’t use paid slots.

Additional subscriptions
The standard premium research includes almost all features described in this manual. There are however some features that require additional subscriptions or fees: Add-ons can be selected from the Standard plan onwards; contact us to include them in your subscription. All prices are VAT exclusive.
The intervention editor (€6,000): The intervention editor (see website) allows you to create a module screen or intervention screen in m-Path. This way you can design environments in which you can implement exercises, explanations and step-by-step guides which your participants can access at their leisure, anytime, anywhere. The subscription allows you to create multiple applets and is only required for designing or adjusting modules, not for disseminating them to participants.
Full mobile sensing (€10,000): This subscription allows you to constantly read the sensors of participants phone (e.g. activity, pedometer, accelerometer, location, app usage, …). For more information, see manual page. While this form of data collection is not yet recommended for clinical use, it can be interesting in research. Sensor data is collected continuously on both Android and iOS devices via the m-Path Sense app.
Mobile sensing lite (€3,000): allows you to read some sensors during a questionnaire. Using this subscription it is also possible to record audio files and take pictures during a questionnaire. For more information, see manual page. Mobile sensing lite is included in the full mobile sensing subscription. Available on both Android and iOS devices.
The mood board editor (€6,000): Clinicians can always just look at participant data themselves and choose graphs for certain variables. The moodboard editor allows a researcher to form visualizations in advance, so relevant data is instantly elevated and clearly represented. Moodboards are web-based feedback pages that participating app users can access. The subscription includes all existing feedback building blocks, such as time series, frequency and correlation plots, and word clouds.
Cognitive test package (€4,500): This subscription allows researchers to add a collection of cognitive tests into questionnaires or applets. The cognitive tests are set up set up (e.g. length, feedback screen, stop criteria) by m-Path in collaboration with the researcher.
Smartwatch integration (€3,000): Collect data through participants’ smartwatches (e.g. Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch).
White-label app (€10,000, plus an annual update fee of €2,000): Provide your content in a standalone app with its own name and logo, which smartphone users can download directly from the App Store and Google Play.
API (€5,000): Get access to the m-Path API to exchange data with other software platforms.
External servers (custom pricing): Have the data collected, processed and stored securely on your own server.
First ESM study support package (€800): Is this your first ESM study? We help you set up a methodologically sound ESM protocol tailored to your specific research question.
Workshop: 2-hour workshop in which the full study design process in m-Path is demonstrated. If your license purchase includes an intervention editor or a full mobile sensing setup, this workshop will be provided to you free of charge..
Support: Technical support is included in any license. However, support on a higher level, pertaining to creating questionnaires and creating complex control flows, can be requested by purchasing this additional support package
Consulting (custom pricing): Our team of experts can be consulted for statistical analysis and in ESM study design. We are also happy to assist you in setting up larger projects and reviewing the complex logic of your survey.
Development (custom pricing): Need a feature that is not currently available in m-Path? Contact us and we will be happy to develop it for a development fee. The new feature will become part of the m-Path platform and be made available to all dashboard users.

Participant limit for add-ons
Pricing for add-ons hold for up to 1000 participant slots per year. Over 1000 participant slots, the pricing scales relatively to this price. For example, sensing full costs 10000 Euro up until 1000 participant slots per year. In combination with 1500 participant slots it would cost 15000 Euro VAT excl. In combination with 2000 participant slots it would cost 20000 Euro VAT excl.
Payment and invoicing
You can pay for a subscription or add-on by credit card or by bank transfer. Choose the option that best fits your institution’s purchasing process.
- Credit card on our website: buy an Essential, Standard or Comfort subscription directly on our pricing page.
- Credit card via a payment link: for add-ons, or for subscriptions you can’t buy on the pricing page, we can send you a secure credit card payment link.
- Bank transfer (invoice): send us your billing address and, if your institution requires them, your VAT number and purchase order (PO) number. We’ll then send you an invoice.
- Quote first: need an official quote (offer) before you can purchase? We can always send you one.
When is my subscription activated? As soon as you’ve paid by credit card, or as soon as we’ve sent you an invoice. If you pay by bank transfer, you don’t have to wait until your payment reaches us.
Do prices include VAT? Prices exclude VAT. Institutions in other EU countries are invoiced without VAT under the reverse charge rule; customers outside the EU are not charged VAT. We can send invoices via Peppol and fill in supplier registration forms.
m-Path is registered on SAM.gov for US institutions.
