When your app is in the background, iOS will eventually suspend it to save battery. Live Activity<\/strong> works around this by keeping a small, always-visible indicator on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island (on supported iPhones), which signals to iOS that your app is actively doing something, in this case, continuously sensing in the background<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requires iOS 26 or later.<\/strong> This feature is not available on Android or older iOS versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to turn it on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You have two ways to enable it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Option 1: From the banner (quickest)<\/strong> A banner labelled “Live activity”<\/em> appears directly in the main screen of the app. Tap the toggle on the right side of that banner. After toggling the live activity on, the banner will dissapear and a small icon will appear in the top right of the screen allowing you to turn it back off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Option 2: From Settings<\/strong> Go to Settings \u2192 Sensing settings<\/strong> and flip the switch inside the Background Sensing<\/em> card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once enabled, the status below the switch will change to “Currently active”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to turn it off<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Go to Settings \u2192 Sensing settings<\/strong> and flip the switch off. The app will ask you to confirm before stopping \u2014 tap Disable<\/strong> to proceed, or Cancel<\/strong> to leave it running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens when it stops?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Background sensing will stop in three situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • You manually disable<\/strong> it via the settings or banner toggle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The selected duration expires<\/strong> (e.g. after 3 days if that was your choice).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • iOS terminates the Live Activity<\/strong> itself (this can happen if the device runs critically low on battery, or if iOS decides to end it).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Opening the Camera app kills the live activity.<\/strong> When you open any app that activates the camera, including the system Camera app, iOS suspends the Live Activity to free up system resources for the camera. This is an iOS limitation and cannot be prevented. To resume the activity after taking a photo or video, return to m-Path Sense and re-enable the Live Activity from the banner on the main screen or from Settings \u2192 Sensing settings<\/strong>.

    Note: This does not necessarily mean that sensing has been stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The OS will show a orange ‘!’<\/strong> sign indicating that the live activity was suspended early, the user is required to turn it back on by going to the app and toggling the switch again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    When enabled, the OS will show a notification for the duration of the activity. The stop button can be used to stop the live activity. Because this is a background task, the activity needs to report some kind of progress, this is also shown to the user around the stop button, unfortunately, we can not remove this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When toggling the live activity, after approximately 5 minutes, the OS will show a confirmation dialog asking the user to proceed or to cancel the activity, it is crucial that the user is aware of this and that they click to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When the user exits the app, or the OS decides to suspend the activity, it will show this to the user in the dynamic island, but also in the notification itself. Unfortunately, we have no control over this error message and icon that the OS will show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tapping the dynamic island will open it up and make the error message bigger. The user can then swipe it away from here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The error message will also be shown in the notification itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Swiping the notification away will not remove the error message from the dynamic island!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Battery usage note<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The app displays an indicator when this feature is active: background sensing uses more battery than normal. If battery life is a concern, choose a shorter duration or disable the feature when you don’t need continuous monitoring.

    Don’t run too many apps in the background.<\/strong> During the study, it’s best to fully close apps once you’re done using them, rather than leaving them running in the background. This way, m-Path Sense remains the only app active in the background, ensuring it can track your data reliably.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
