This items can be used to assess the change and variability of a certain construct in an interval. For example, when stress is measured using a normal repeated measurements protocol, it is impossible to know what happened between the beeps. Using this item it is possible to recover this information. The example questionnaire &#8216;continuous line example&#8217;, found in the library of m-Path, gives a small example of how this can be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Untitled-Project.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A participant can draw a continuous line.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This question type or item has multiple settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Question or statement<\/strong>: The full question. The text is shown smaller than for other questions and cannot be formatted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Label<\/strong>: The label of the question, the name of the variable when data is exported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reference label<\/strong>: The reference label is the label from another question. If the reference label is given the blue dot on the left and right (see video above) can be added. These are set at previous and current measurement of the question related to this reference label. The previous measurement is fetched from the previous filled in questionnaire that use the reference label. This way app users can fill in the continuous line question with how they felt between two measurements. The use of this reference label is also shown in the example questionnaire &#8216;continuous line example&#8217; in the library. If this questionnaire is filled in multiple times, the dots appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Min Y label:<\/strong> text shown on the bottom left of the y-axis. If nothing is filled in, the theoretical minimum of the question of the reference label is taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Max Y label:<\/strong> text shown on the top left of the y-axis. If nothing is filled in, the theoretical maximum of the question of the reference label is taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Min X label:<\/strong> text shown on the bottom left side on x-axis. If nothing is filled in, it shows the time of previous measurement of the reference label. The time of the previous questionnaire where this reference label was last assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Max X label: <\/strong>text shown on the bottom right side of the x-axis. If nothing is filled in, it shows the text &#8216;now&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minimum value: <\/strong>the minimum y value of the continuous line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maximum value: <\/strong>the maximum y value of the continuous line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No autocomplete<\/strong>: By default, the line does autocomplete. That means when a user starts a bit right from the y-axis (at the minimum x value), the line is automatically drawn to start at the y-axis. Similarly, when the app user stops drawing before the maximum x-value is reached, the line is automatically drawn to the maximum x-value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>new items:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Number of events<\/strong>: When you want the user to add events this property tells you how many events the user <strong>has<\/strong> to add before proceeding to draw the continuous line. The user then has to tap and hold on the graph to choose a placement for a event, after that they can choose a name for this event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Start time<\/strong>: The start time is the time for x0. This can be an integer value or a string value. If this value is an integer, make sure that it is in seconds since epoch time. This can be computed with the as.epochTime function in <a href=\"https:\/\/manual.m-path.io\/knowledge-base\/computation-item-r\/#asepochtime\" data-type=\"ht_kb\" data-id=\"9574\">computations<\/a> (ADD LINK NAAR COMPUTATION). If this value were to be a string value, this needs to be a declared variable in a computation that holds a seconds since epoch value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Stop time<\/strong>: Same as start time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Show time labels<\/strong>:  This property is used to toggle the time labels under the graph. These do not include the once shown because of the use of a reference label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>When adding pre defined events as a researcher, the following properties can be used:<br><\/strong><br><strong>Event names Label<\/strong>: The label of a variable in a computation that holds an<br>vector of event names. This property is not obligated to add.<br><strong>Y List Label<\/strong> -&gt; Filling in this label, with a vector of Y values, will give the pre added event a red dot, this red dot will act as a magnetic anchor point for the user to draw trough.<br><strong>Event times list label<\/strong> -&gt; Label for a variable that holds a vector of seconds since epoch values. These will decide where the event is drawn on the graph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">User has to add 2 events<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls muted src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/add_2_events.mov\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Users first have to add 2 events before they can draw the continuous line.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After letting the user add events and draw the continuous line, it is possible to ask some follow up questions about these events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:300px\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/loop_over_added_events-4.mov\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The user answers follow up questions about added events<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers can also add events to the continuous line where the user has to draw trough:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/pre_added_events.mov\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pre defined events<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon is-style-info\">The example questionnaire &#8220;Continuous Line v2 &#8211; Examples&#8221; in the library showcases more examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Output<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The output the researcher will be able to export from this question is a list of numbers. The first half give the x-values, the second half give the y-values.
